Why newborn sessions happen at home
Home is the easiest place for a newborn session because everything your baby needs is already there: the feeding chair, the changing table and a familiar, quiet room. Nobody has to pack a diaper bag, drive across town or worry about timing a feed around a studio slot.
It also makes the photos more personal. The nursery you prepared, the blanket from grandma, the window where you rock your baby to sleep and the first family portraits on your own bed are details a studio can't give you. If you'd rather use another location, tell me and we'll plan around it; the location is flexible.
The session runs about two and a half hours. That sounds long for someone so small, but newborn photos are mostly waiting: feeds, burps, diaper changes and cuddles until your baby drifts off again. The extra time means nobody has to rush.
How a newborn session works
A newborn session is calm and baby-led. Comfort and safety come first: we keep the room warm, I handle your baby gently and only in simple, natural positions, and a parent stays close for every setup.
A typical session moves through a few parts:
- Sleepy baby portraits with the props and wraps I bring, so you don't need to buy anything
- Tiny details: fingers, toes, eyelashes, hair swirls and the little hospital bracelet
- Parents with baby: close, quiet portraits of you holding your newborn
- Siblings and family: a few photos with big brothers and sisters, grandparents or pets if you'd like
- Everyday moments: feeding, swaddling and the nursery, the way your days really look right now
If your baby is awake and alert instead of sleepy, that's fine too. Wide-eyed photos and little yawns are often the ones parents love most, for the same reasons I write about in why candid photos matter more.
How to prepare for your newborn photos
The easiest way to prepare is to keep things simple and warm. You don't need to clean the whole house; we only use one or two rooms, and a bedroom or living room with a big window is usually perfect.
- Warm the room a little before I arrive, since babies sleep best when they're cozy
- Feed your baby shortly before we start, if the timing works
- Pick plain, soft clothing for parents in light or neutral colors, and skip big logos
- Set out anything meaningful you'd like included: a special blanket, a name sign, a family heirloom
- Keep the day free of other plans so nobody feels rushed
Many families book newborn photos in the first couple of weeks, when babies tend to sleep deeply and curl up easily. Older babies photograph beautifully too, just with more awake, curious moments. Messaging me before your due date makes it easier to plan around your baby's arrival.
What you receive
You receive hand-edited newborn photos in a private online gallery within 7 days of your session, just in time for birth announcements and sharing with family far away. I edit every image manually, softening skin and evening out color while keeping your baby looking like your baby.
The number of photos depends on the session and how many family members join. From the gallery you can download your favorites and choose images for prints, cards or albums.
Booking is simple: message me on WhatsApp or use the contact form with your due date or your baby's birth date, your neighborhood and who will be in the photos, and I'll come back with availability and a quote. If you're still expecting, a maternity session is a lovely first chapter, and a family session later on shows how much everyone has grown.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time for newborn photos?
Many families choose the first couple of weeks, when babies are sleepiest and curl up easily. Older babies are welcome too; their photos simply have more awake, alert moments.
How much does a newborn photoshoot cost?
Newborn sessions start from $400 for 3 hours at your home, with props included. Message me with your dates and I'll send an exact quote.
Do I need to buy props or outfits?
No. I bring the props and wraps for the baby portraits. You only need simple, soft clothing for any family photos.
Why does a newborn session take two and a half hours?
Newborns need feeds, changes and cuddles between photos. The extra time lets the session follow your baby's pace instead of the clock.
Can parents and siblings be in the photos?
Yes. Photos with parents, siblings, grandparents and even pets are part of most newborn sessions, and they often become the family favorites.
