In-Home Newborn Photography in Glen Allen, VA: A Real Session
By Priya Shanu - 2026-10-09
A newborn session at home is one of my favorite things to photograph. Nobody has to pack a diaper bag, find parking or worry about feeding times in a studio - the baby stays in a familiar place, and the whole family can wander in and out of the photos. This September I photographed a brand-new baby girl, her parents and her very proud big sister at their home in Glen Allen, and I wanted to share how the session came together. If you are planning newborn photos in Glen Allen or Richmond, this is what an in-home session with me really looks like.
Setting up at home
I arrive with the props and set up in whichever room has the softest light - usually near a big window, with a small corner cleared for a little bed and backdrop. For this family we built a sweet "welcome home baby girl" scene with a white faux-fur bed, soft pink florals and a garland across the back. Set-up takes about fifteen minutes, so parents can feed and settle the baby while I work.

Props are included with every newborn session: headbands, little outfits, soft fur and fabric layers, and small details like pearls and blooms. You don't need to buy anything, though I always love including a blanket, toy or outfit that means something to your family.
Sleepy poses, at the baby's pace
Newborns set the pace, and that is exactly how it should be. We feed, burp and swaddle first, keep the room warm, and let the baby drift off before I start posing. Every pose is gentle and supported, and a parent's hands are always close by. When she woke up halfway through, we simply switched to awake portraits - those wide-eyed photos often end up being the parents' favorites.

The tiny details
The little things change so quickly: the curl of the fingers, the wrinkles on the feet, the size of a whole foot next to a parent's hand. I always save time for detail shots, and they look beautiful in black and white or grouped together in an album.

Once the sleepy set is done, the parents get their turn. I guide you into simple, natural positions - holding the baby close, a kiss on the forehead - and then step back so the moments can happen on their own. With this family we also stepped out into their backyard for portraits under the trees in open shade, and the grandparents joined in for some photos too. You don't need a fancy location - a backyard with a bit of greenery works beautifully.

Big brothers and sisters are often the stars of a newborn session. I give them a job - holding a flower, sitting right next to the baby, giving a gentle kiss - so they feel part of the day instead of waiting on the side. This big sister was a natural, and the photos of her with her baby sister are some of the sweetest from the whole session.

How to plan your own in-home newborn session
- When to book: reach out during pregnancy and we will pencil in a date around your due date, then confirm once the baby arrives. The first two weeks are the sleepiest, which makes curled-up poses easiest, but older babies photograph beautifully too - they just give us more awake, alert expressions.
- How long it takes: plan for about 2.5 hours. That leaves room for feeding, changes and cuddles without anyone feeling rushed.
- Keep the room warm: a cozy room helps newborns sleep through posing. A space heater and some white noise help a lot.
- Feed right before: a full, sleepy baby is the best start to any session.
- What parents should wear: soft, simple clothing in neutral or muted colors photographs well and lets the baby stand out. Coordinate rather than match.
- Siblings and grandparents: they are always welcome. Let me know who is joining so I can plan time for everyone.
