What I photograph at a baby shower
At a baby shower, I photograph the whole celebration the way you'll want to remember it, from the setup before guests arrive to the last family photo. Coverage usually includes:
- Decor and details - the backdrop, balloons, cake, dessert table, favors and the personal touches you spent weeks planning
- The parents-to-be - portraits together and with the decor while you still look fresh
- Guests and family - candid conversations, hugs at the door and group photos with each side of the family

- Family moments - blessings, wishes and hugs from grandparents, family and friends

Gender reveals: catching the moment
A gender reveal comes down to a few seconds, so I plan for it before it happens. Ahead of time, I'll ask exactly how your reveal works - balloon, box, cake, confetti cannon, colored smoke or something else - and where everyone will stand. Then I position myself to see both the reveal and your faces, because the reaction is the photo you'll keep.
A few things help:
- Hold the reveal in open light, outdoors or near big windows, rather than in a dark corner
- Count down out loud so everyone, including me, is ready
- Keep close family nearby so their reactions land in the same frame
- Have a backup plan in case wind or weather affects smoke or confetti
After the big moment, I photograph the hugs, the happy chaos and a few calm portraits once things settle.
Homes, venues and indoor light
Most baby showers around Richmond happen indoors: a family home in Glen Allen, a clubhouse in Short Pump, a restaurant's private room or a community hall. Indoor light varies a lot, so I look over the room when I arrive and find the windows and clean backgrounds that work best for portraits.
