How a maternity session works
A maternity session with me is a slow, guided walk rather than a checklist of poses. We start with a few easy portraits so you can settle in, then I give simple prompts - walk together, rest a hand on the bump, look at each other instead of the camera - and photograph what happens in between.
I've been behind a camera since 2001, and the thing I watch most closely during a maternity session is comfort. Pregnancy changes how long you want to stand, how warm you get and how often you need a break, so the pace follows you. Breaks, water and a place to sit are part of the plan.
Partners, older siblings and even the family dog are welcome. A typical session covers:
- A few classic profile portraits that show the bump clearly
- Candid moments with your partner or kids
- Close details: hands, ultrasound prints, tiny shoes or a letter to the baby
- Wider frames that show the place you chose
You can see the style in my maternity portfolio.
Where to take maternity photos around Richmond
The best maternity locations around Richmond have soft light, open space and a short walk from parking. A few that suit maternity sessions especially well:
- Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden - flowering beds and garden paths, lovely in spring and early fall
- Maymont - big old trees, open lawns and formal gardens with a timeless feel
- Deep Run Park - close to Glen Allen and Short Pump, with quiet paths and water, easy if you'd rather not drive downtown
- Your home - a nursery in progress, a window seat or soft morning light in your bedroom can be the most personal setting of all
Gardens and parks set their own rules for professional photography, so we'll check current photography rules before choosing one. I'm happy to help you weigh the options.
Timing matters as much as the place. Outdoors, I usually suggest the last hour or two before sunset, when the light is warm and flattering and the heat of the day has eased. My post on the best time of day for outdoor photos explains why.
How to prepare and what to wear
The easiest way to prepare is to choose one or two outfits that fit comfortably and show your shape, then keep everything else simple. Flowing dresses, fitted knits and soft neutral or earthy colors photograph beautifully and keep the attention on you and the bump. Skip busy prints and logos, and bring flat shoes for walking between spots.
A few practical tips:
- Pack a light snack and a water bottle
- Dress your partner and kids in colors that sit alongside yours rather than matching exactly
- Bring meaningful props: ultrasound photos, baby shoes or a tiny outfit
- Book a time of day when you usually feel your best

What you receive
You receive a set of hand-edited maternity photos in a private online gallery within 7 days of your session. I edit every image manually, adjusting light, color and skin tones so the photos look natural and like you on a good day, not filtered.
The number of photos depends on the session, the number of outfits and how many people join. From the gallery you can download your favorites, share them with family and pick images for prints or a birth announcement.
Booking is simple: message me on WhatsApp or use the contact form with your due date, preferred location and who will be in the photos, and I'll come back with availability and a quote. If you'd like to keep telling the story, baby shower coverage and a family session after the baby arrives are natural next chapters.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to schedule maternity photos?
Many photographers suggest a session around 28 to 34 weeks, when the bump is clearly showing but most people still feel comfortable moving around. If you're expecting twins or tiring more easily, aim a little earlier.
How much does a maternity photoshoot cost?
Maternity sessions start from $250 for 2 hours. Message me with your plans and I'll send an exact quote.
What should I wear for maternity photos?
One or two comfortable outfits that show your shape, such as a flowing dress or a fitted knit, in soft solid colors. Avoid large logos and busy prints, and bring flat shoes for walking.
Can my partner and kids be in the photos?
Yes. Partners, siblings and pets are all welcome, and the photos together often become the favorites.
What happens if it rains?
Outdoor sessions can be rescheduled based on availability. If you'd rather keep the date, we can move the session indoors to your home.
