Kids Photoshoot: from $250, 2 hours. Hand-edited photos in a private gallery within 7 days.
How I photograph kids
The secret to good kids photos is letting children play and being ready when the real expressions show up. I don't ask toddlers to sit still and say cheese. Instead I follow them, get down to their eye level and use games, bubbles, silly questions and a favorite toy to draw out big laughs and quiet, thoughtful looks.
Sessions run at a kid's pace. If someone needs a snack, a reset or five minutes of running in circles, that's fine; some of the best frames come right after a break. Parents are part of it too, and a few photos of you holding, tickling or swinging your child often end up being the ones you treasure most.
I'm a documentary-first photographer, which means I care more about real moments than perfect poses. I wrote about that in why candid photos matter more. You can see recent sessions, many of them first and third birthdays, in my kids portfolio.
First birthdays and other milestones
Milestones are the most popular reason to book a kids session. A milestone shoot is short, focused and planned around one stage of life you want to remember.
First birthday and cake smash
A first birthday session usually pairs a few clean portraits with a cake smash, where your little one meets their first cake on their own terms. Some babies dive straight in and some poke it with one finger, and both make great photos. Bring a change of clothes and a towel.
Birthday parties
If you'd rather have the whole party covered, from the decorations and guests to the cake cutting, event photography is the better fit. My post on creative birthday party themes kids love has ideas that also look great on camera.
Everyday milestones
A first day of school, a new sibling, a missing front tooth or simply being three: any stage you want to hold on to is worth a session.
Where to photograph kids around Richmond
For kids, the best location is one where they feel free to move. Home is often the easiest choice: familiar toys, their own room and no long car ride mean happier kids and more natural photos. A backyard or a quiet street nearby works well too.
If you'd like to head out, a few kid-friendly spots around Richmond:
- Meadow Farm Museum in Glen Allen, with open fields, fences and a farm setting
- Deep Run Park, close to Short Pump, with paths, trees and room to run
- Byrd Park, with lawns and water views closer to the city
Check current photography rules for any park before your session. Outdoors, I usually recommend morning or the hour or two before sunset, when the light is softer and kids are often in a better mood than at midday. For babies and toddlers, plan around naps first and light second.
What you receive
After a kids session, you receive hand-edited photos in a private online gallery within 7 days. I edit every image by hand to keep skin tones natural and colors bright and true, without heavy filters.
The number of photos depends on the session and how many outfits or setups we do. From the gallery you can download your favorites and send them to grandparents in a couple of clicks. If the session is tied to a birthday, book a couple of weeks ahead so the photos are ready for invitations or thank-you cards.
To book, send me a message on WhatsApp or through the contact form. Tell me your child's age, what you're celebrating and where you'd like to shoot, and I'll reply with availability and a quote. Planning photos with the whole family too? Take a look at family photography.
Frequently asked questions
What age is best for kids photos?
Any age works. Popular times are when a baby can sit up on their own, around the first birthday, and the toddler and preschool years when personality really shows.
How much is a kids photoshoot?
Kids sessions start from $250 for 2 hours, which leaves plenty of time for breaks and play. I'll send an exact quote once I know your plans.
What should my child wear?
Comfortable clothes in solid or softly patterned colors work best. Skip big logos and cartoon characters, and bring a backup outfit for cake smashes or messy play.
What if my child is shy or has a meltdown?
That's completely normal and planned for. We take breaks, play and let them warm up at their own pace, and some of the sweetest photos come after a tough moment.
Do you photograph whole birthday parties?
Yes. Full parties are covered under Event Photography, which includes the decor, guests and cake cutting plus one Instagram reel.
